Sister Nancy Pereira, Help of the Helpless  with Mary Help of Christians

Nancy Pereira, the ‘Indefatigable Entrepreneur in the service of helping the poor’ and the ‘Sister Banker’, who won several international recognitions for her meritorious service on behalf of the marginalized women and children of South India, is a daring but humble Daughter of Mary Help of Christians. Yes, a worthy daughter of the august Mother, Mary Help of Christians, who translated the Salesian Charism and mission, into fruitful and relevant apostolic action in Indian soil.
Sr. Nancy inherited from her deeply pious parents a strong faith in God, tender devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary our Mother. Right from the beginning, Nancy was very much aware of being the child of Mother Mary. First and foremost, Nancy’s mother had told her that she was born on August 15th as the angelus bells chimed from her parish, and therefore she attributes her birth to a love of predilection of this heavenly mother. She was thus convinced that it was not by chance that Mother Mary brought her into this world on this significant day and to this particular Congregation of FMA.
Sr. Nancy grew steadily in her relationship with Mary and tried to pass on this great devotion and love to all who approached her. She insisted the FIDES staff to be devoted to Our Lady: “It is not enough that we call Mary our Mother, in time of trouble, but we need to love her and be humble and live like her. Like the Sun who is giving light to the world, Mother Mary gives light to all who live in darkness by showing and giving Jesus to us.”
Just like our father and founder Don Bosco, Sr. Nancy undertook every project, trusting in Mary: when she started the Women’s Welfare Centre with 24 women in a hut, in Vyasarpadi, she placed a statue of Our Blessed Mother there at the centre and started lace-making session. When she was the Animator in Pallikonda, she acquired some land from the Government and put up a few houses for the poor people. She then placed a beautiful statue of Mary Help of Christians and entrusted them to her motherly care. “If Mary wants, we will go there,” this is what she used to tell the Sisters when they looked for new villages or slums to extend their work.  “Mamma Mia,” her favourite invocation was always on her lips.
Some of the orphans brought up by Sr. Nancy in Pallikonda (INM) said that when they were feeling lonely and dejected, Nancy would gently tap on their shoulder and tell them, “Why are you sad? Go to Mother Mary, you will be alright”. In this way, she taught them to cultivate filial love towards their heavenly mother.
Sisters who lived with her testify to her immense love for the Madonna and the rosary. Though tired and ailing, she always prayed the rosary kneeling down, to the edification of all.  She almost insisted with the Sisters to pray the community rosary in the chapel and wanted the statue of Mother Mary to be illumined with the crown of twelve stars. When she was sick and Sisters had asked her to pray the rosary in her room, she replied, ‘it is very nice to pray the rosary in front of Mother Mary in the church, than praying it in the room. I see Our Lady looks at me and smiles at me. So I do not want to miss this special predilection.’ “One day we were all in her room speaking, and she gently said, ‘speak softly, Our Lady is passing here.’ She was gazing upwards and there was a serene smile on her lips. It impressed me so much and made me realize her great love for our Blessed Mother.”
Being a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, Sr. Nancy   immediately understood her role when she was called to help the poor and the afflicted in Vyasarpadi: to be a visible hand of Mother Mary to the thousands of abandoned women, youth, children and men and she did fulfil that role in an exceptional manner, to be remembered even after quarter of a century with vivid memories and be called ‘Mother,’ by her beneficiaries and collaborators.
Sr. Nancy had regular encounters with women at M.V. Garden. Often she would place as their role model Mother Mary, who faced challenges though different from theirs, renewing her confidence and trust in God who called her for a special mission on earth. Sr. Nancy has thus succeeded to spread new light on the face of many women, chasing out from their minds the idea of ending up their lives in utter despair and filling their minds and hearts with lively hope and joyous enthusiasm of being motivated to live on and face the challenges of life courageously placing their wholehearted trust in Mother Mary, who they believe walks along with them showing the right path to trod.
To the FIDES staff Nancy often presented the role of Mary at the wedding feast of Cana where she noticed the need of the couple and at once requested Jesus to fill up what was missing. In the same manner, she exhorted her close collaborators to be attentive to the needs of others and intercede to Jesus for them along with Mother Mary. This is what she practised in her life. She saw the misery of the slum dwellers, in Vysarpadi, in Ulsoor and other places where obedience placed her and interceded with Mother Mary. Sr. Nancy did as He said: “filling up the wine jars” is equal to filling up the life of the poor with good health of mind, body and soul by education and economic development starting with thrift savings so that they can take small loans to fulfil all their needs.
An austere and prayerful life, inculcating in herself and in others a spirit of true contentment like Mary made her to be a mother among the poor in imitation of our Blessed Mother. Sr. Nancy drew her inspiration and strength in all her enterprises from our Blessed Mother. She went ahead with courage and tenacity despite innumerable difficulties and challenges with full confidence in our Blessed Mother. These testimonies bring us to conclusion that Sr. Nancy was the living and dynamic presence of Mary Help of Christians; an instrument in the hand of Mary to build the kingdom of her Divine Son in the slums and villages.
